Storage-in-Transit (SIT) is a federal regulatory term defined by the FMCSA. It refers to temporary storage — typically 90 days or less — that's part of the continuous service of an interstate (state-to-state) move. It's the industry term for the gap between when your stuff leaves the old house and when it arrives at the new one.
SIT is built into the way Bekins Van Lines (and every legitimate van line agent) handles cross-country moves. Your shipment can pause at our San Jose warehouse for up to 90 days under the same Bekins coverage that protects it during transit. After 90 days, SIT converts to permanent storage, which is governed by warehouse storage rules instead of interstate-transit rules.
Why this matters: if you're doing a cross-country move and the new house has any chance of slipping, building SIT into the booking up front protects your shipment under continuous coverage instead of forcing you to scramble for a self-storage unit at the last minute.
For local and California-only intrastate moves, the term is just "storage" — same warehouse, same containers, same flexibility, different regulatory category.
The Process
We come to your home (or do a video survey), inventory what you're storing, and give you a written estimate. No surprises — you know what storage will cost before we touch a thing.
Our crew arrives at your home to wrap, protect, and inventory every piece of furniture and every box. Once everything is loaded onto our truck, this half of the job is done, the same as any standard SVM move.
The truck comes back to our San Jose warehouse. Our crew unloads your belongings directly into an enclosed Storage Vault assigned only to you, never mixed with another client's. Once it's full, we close the vault, security-seal it, and label it. It's climate-controlled and monitored 24/7, billed month to month, with no minimum stay.
Tell us where and when, anywhere in the country. We schedule your delivery and coordinate the details, including Bekins long-haul for out-of-state moves.
When your date arrives, we deliver your belongings to the address you choose. The same crew and the same care that packed your things handle the delivery.

As long as you need. We have customers who've stored a few items for a few days during a renovation. We have other customers who've stored entire households for multiple years during overseas placements. There's no maximum, no auto-disposal, no forced exit.

If your storage is part of an active interstate move, Storage-in-Transit coverage continues under your selected Bekins valuation (Released Value or Full Value Protection) for up to 90 days. After 90 days, coverage converts to warehouse storage liability — which is legally distinct from transit liability. We'll explain your specific coverage at booking and walk through what's covered under each phase.
Yes. We can retrieve specific items from your storage on request. There's typically a small handling fee, and we recommend giving us a few days' notice so we can pull the right container without disrupting other shipments. For full delivery, we coordinate the date with you.
Self-storage is a space you rent and manage yourself. Our process is different. Our crew comes to your home, wraps and protects every piece of furniture, and loads it onto our truck, the same process as any SVM move. The truck returns to our warehouse, where our crew unloads your belongings directly into an enclosed Storage Vault assigned only to you, never mixed with anyone else's. Once the vault is full, we close it, security-seal it, and label it, and it stays in our warehouse, untouched, for as long as you need.
Fine. We store a single piece of furniture, a few boxes, or full households. The container minimum is one 8×10 unit, which holds roughly the contents of a small studio (or a lot of boxes). For one or two pieces, we'll likely combine them with other partial loads — same climate-controlled environment, same retrieval process.
