Set up "destination boxes" before you tackle any decluttering project. Use boxes or plastic bags labeled: TRASH, DONATE, GIFT, RECYCLE, TRANSFER and SELL. For closet or cupboard spaces, you may want to complete the sorting process first. Keep like-with-like items in the same location: jewelry, ski clothes, kitchen knives, etc. Whatever the category, cluster the objects in close proximity to each other so you know what you have.

- Pack individual offices and office spaces, label boxes according to where you would like the items placed in the new office

- Measure spaces to ensure current furniture and equipment will fit

When planning your next move, the best way to avoid problems is to hire a reputable, professional mover. When you are selecting a mover, below are some helpful tips.
- Contact your local movers association to find out what the mover's reputation is in the industry or if the mover is a member and in good standing. The reputation of a professional mover will be known by the moving industry.
- A professional mover will resolve customer complaints. Check with your local Better Business Bureau (BBB) to find out if they have a good record and are in good standing.
- A professional mover will always spell out their costs and payment terms and conditions in writing. An ethical mover will be clear about their liability if there is loss or damage of goods during the move. They will explain their liability if you pack or they pack for you, also in writing.
- A professional mover will tell you where your goods will be stored, if they have to sit in a truck overnight or in long-term storage. Try to visit the mover's warehouse area before booking your move to ensure it's a safe and clean.
- A mover's large advertisement does not mean the company is ethical or will provide professional moving services. Logos in the ad are useful indicators or the company's affiliations, but only if you verify them with their respective organizations.

Shipping your vehicle across the country avoids turning your move into a road trip. When deciding to transport your vehicle, consider the cost, time and insurance beforehand so you know what to expect.
Cost will depend on several factors:
- the location of the origin and destination
- the distance between the origin and destination
- the type of vehicle (heavier cars cost more to transport)
- door-to-door or terminal-to-terminal service
- special option requests, i.e. enclosed car transport
Time to transport a vehicle will vary based on the distance and locations of the origin and destination. A coast-to-coast move on average can take one to two weeks.
Insurance coverage provided by your transporter may include a deductible in the event there is damage, and you will want to ask if their insurance is primary or secondary to your own.
Consider not leaving any personal goods in your vehicle in the event of loss or damage. Boxes may make your car heavier, increasing the cost. If you decide to include personal goods in your trunk, make sure your auto-transporter is licensed to be an interstate mover, otherwise they may be fined for transporting personal goods across state lines (any fines will be passed on to you).
